From 21 October to 1 November, global leaders are gathering in Cali, Colombia, for COP16 – the 16th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity. This conference presents a critical moment to assess progress against the goal to reverse biodiversity loss by 2030. Today, Sunday 27 October, is Ocean Day at COP16 and the focus is shifting towards marine biodiversity and the urgent need to safeguard the ocean. The WWF Global Arctic Programme is steering the attention to the Arctic Ocean ecosystems, which are facing unprecedented threats. Urging governments to act now, the WWF have drawn up a blueprint for marine conservation in the Arctic – ArcNet – to support the implementation of strategies and plans that will be essential to meet the targets of protecting 30% of land and sea by 2030.
