Open position: Deputy-Director of Ocean Conservation at Oceano Azul – Deadline when position is filled

The Oceano Azul Foundation is seeking a Deputy-Director of Ocean Conservation who will serve as the second line of command working closely with the Foundation’s executive leadership to implement the Foundation’s goals and objectives. Key responsibilities include to oversee a team of project managers, working closely with contractors and experts, responsible for the management of conservation projects, mainly of marine protected areas (MPAs) and sustainable fisheries, providing strategic guidance, coordinating activities, and ensuring the successful implementation of conservation programs. The Deputy-Director of Ocean Conservation plays a crucial role in fostering collaboration among team members, contractors, and stakeholders, facilitating effective communication, and ensuring the efficient use of resources.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and implement strategies for the effective management of conservation projects, mainly of marine protected areas (MPAs) and sustainable fisheries.
  • Lead a team of conservation professionals, providing guidance, mentoring, and support to ensure the successful implementation of conservation programs.
  • Collaborate with national and international organizations, research institutions, and NGOs to exchange knowledge and best practices in marine conservation.
  • Stay updated on current scientific research, emerging technologies, and policy developments in the field of marine conservation.
  • Develop and manage budgets, fundraising initiatives, and grant proposals to secure financial resources for conservation activities.
  • Coordinate scientific research, namely expeditions, to assess the health and status of marine ecosystems, identify threats, and propose appropriate conservation measures.
  • Evaluate contractors’ reports and analysis on marine conservation issues.
  • Coordinate actions to advocate for marine conservation at local, national, and international levels, raising awareness about the importance of MPAs and promoting sustainable practices.
  • Acts as a one of the spokespersons of the Foundation, effectively communicating its vision and initiatives to a wide range of national and international stakeholders, including policymakers, the media, and the general public, raising awareness about the Foundation’s work and garnering support for marine conservation efforts.
  • Monitor and evaluate the impact and effectiveness of conservation projects, using data and metrics to drive continuous improvement and inform strategic decision-making.
  • Report the status on the Foundation’s conservation programs activities and budget execution to the executive leadership on a regular basis.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in management, marine biology, conservation science, or related fields.
  • Proven experience in designing, managing, and implementing conservation strategies, ideally with a focus on marine ecosystems and protected areas.
  • Strong knowledge of marine biology and ecology and on how marine ecosystems and resources contribute to sustainable economic development and ocean health.
  • Excellent leadership and project management skills, with the ability to effectively plan, coordinate, and execute complex nature conservation initiatives, work with contractors and stakeholders, and manage teams with different backgrounds.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to engage and collaborate with stakeholders, communities, and diverse teams.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to think critically and develop innovative solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to secure funding through grant writing, partnerships, or other fundraising methods.
  • Familiarity with policies, regulations, and frameworks related to marine conservation and protected areas.
  • Passion for environmental sustainability, marine biodiversity, and the protection of nature.
  • Willingness and availability to be expatriated to Lisbon, Portugal, for the duration of the position, and to travel frequently for meetings, conferences, and networking events.
