Mercator Ocean – Project Scientist (12 months contract)

Mercator Ocean is the French ocean analysis and forecasting centre. It designs, develops, operates and maintains state-of-the-art scientific numerical-modelling systems that are able to describe, analyse and forecast the state of the ocean in 3D, continuously and in real time. Mercator Ocean is a subsidiary of five major French institutions involved in the development of operational oceanography – CNRS, IFREMER, IRD, Meteo France and SHOM. Mercator Ocean’s activities include R&D, operational systems, expert forecasting and the services it provides to users around the world (scientists, public agencies, industry, etc.). The company is located at Ramonville Saint-Agne, near Toulouse.

In November 2014, the European Commission delegated the setting-up of the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS) to Mercator Ocean. The service has been provided since spring of 2015.

To participate in the development of our international projects, we are now looking for a Project Scientist to join the Scientific Direction of Mercator Ocean.

You will contribute to the monitoring of coordination activities on the scientific quality of CMEMS products. You will provide regular technical and scientific review of CMEMS contractors’ reports and associated technical documentations. You will participate to the Product Quality Working Group activities and its associated Cal/Val Quarterly reporting and communication activities.

You will provide an annual review of R&D plans and scientific reports of CMEMS contractors.

You will contribute to the preparation of synthesis of R&D results and achievements from these contractors. You will contribute to the selection and monitoring of a series of R&D contracts related to the CMEMS service evolution activities. You will prepare and present syntheses of existing projects. You will contribute to the selection of new R&D projects in interaction with the CMEMS Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee (STAC).

 

An engineering degree and/or a PhD with a minimum of 3 years of professional experience is required. You have good project monitoring skills. You have very good skills in oceanography and operational oceanography. You are rigorous, organised and responsive, and you wish to contribute with your skills and your ideas to ambitious projects. You speak and write English fluently.
