Atlantic Ocean Climate Scholars Programme
In 2016, NF-POGO funds several students from developing countries to participate in the Atlantic Ocean Climate Scholars Programme in Galway, Ireland, from 12th to 19 September 2016. This course focuses on how climate and oceans interact, with particular examples from the Atlantic Ocean and higher latitudes.
The course explores the natural mechanisms responsible for climate variations and their response to human impacts, based on the latest IPCC Assessment Report published in 2013. All components of the climate system are addressed, with a special focus on the Atlantic Ocean and its ecosystems. Tools for modelling and observations are presented, as well as activities with respect to the societal response to global warming.
The programme is a collaboration between the Strategic Marine Alliance for Research and Training (SMART), NUI Galway, the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI), the Helmholtz Climate programme REKLIM, the Partnership for Observation of the Global Ocean (POGO), and is supported by the Nippon Foundation. The Atlantic Ocean Climate Scholars Programme will be led by Prof. Peter Lemke (AWI, REKLIM) and Prof. Peter Croot (NUI Galway) with lectures, practical sessions and field-trips delivered by experts from Ireland and Germany.
