About AIMS

The Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) is Australia’s tropical marine research agency. Our research into some of Australia’s iconic marine ecosystems guides their management and that of similar systems around the world. We do marine science that has practical benefit to the real world, providing high quality, large-scale and long-term research that is used by governments, industry and the wider community to make informed decisions about the Great Barrier Reef, North-West Shelf and Arafura and Timor Seas. AIMS researchers at our locations in Townsville, Darwin and Perth have access to the best tools and equipment like the National Sea Simulator, cutting edge laboratories and our fleet of research vessels.

About this Opportunity

AIMS’s Oceanographic Scientists perform essential activities that support Australia’s Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS). IMOS National Moorings Network comprises a series of national reference stations and regional moorings designed to monitor oceanographic phenomena in Australian coastal ocean waters such as boundary currents and cross shelf exchanges to better our understanding of the tropical marine environment and ecosystems and their response to change across Queensland and Northern Australia. In this exciting role, you will be relied upon to provide high quality time series data streams from the IMOS moorings array through calibration, data processing and analysis. Working in laboratory and (off-shore) field environments, you’ll support scientific research through the application of your scientific and technical expertise in the operation and deployment of AIMS and IMOS Oceanographic and Meteorological instruments. Whilst your marine competencies will enable you to participate in fieldwork at sea to service, deploy and recover equipment, your organisational skills will ensure that you successfully contribute to the planning of trips.

Apply now and join a world leading organisation with attractive working conditions. The successful candidate will be rewarded with:

  • AOF Level 3 to 4 Salary ($64,793 to $94,034 per annum) depending on qualifications, skills and experience.
  • 15.4% superannuation
  • Generous leave provisions
  • Full-time, 3-year opportunity
  • Located in Townsville, Queensland
