CIMA is accepting expressions of interest for a post-doc fellowship to support the Operational Oceanography group carrying out research and develop work related to the application of Data Assimilation methodologies in the scope of two EU funded projects (CIU3A and NAUTILUS). The Researcher will work towards building a data assimilation system to improve the existing operational coastal forecast system SOMA. This will require coordination with other research groups and national/international institutions responsible for ocean observation as well as the participation in field work, mainly AUV missions.

Responsibilities
• Develop an ocean data assimilation (DA) system for the SOMA model, customized for the group’s operational oceanography tasks.

• Coordinate with other research groups and institutions responsible for ocean observations, to promote the use of ocean observations with the DA system developed.

• Implement and operationalize the DA system in SOMA operational workflow and access its scientific benchmark evaluations.

• Integrate and actively contribute to the group’s AUV coastal observation program, optimizing it to the DA system implemented.

• Actively contribute to the group’s scientific publication track, project reporting and CIMA scientific dissemination activities.

Qualifications
PhD in Oceanography, Atmospheric Science, Computer Science, Engineering or other related physical or mathematical sciences, with at least 3 years of post doc experience in the DA field.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Experience in one or more of the following areas are required:
• 3 years of experience in Data Assimilation: Meteorology/Oceanography

• Developing and testing numerical environmental prediction codes in a highperformance computing environment

• Object oriented programming in Fortran/Python.

• Experience with developing and running complex jobs and processing large volumes of numerical data in a high-performance computing system as well as using advanced statistical analysis tools.

• Demonstrated ability to work efficiently and independently in a team environment

• Communicate effectively using good oral and written communication skills, with good proficiency in the English language.

• Ability to participate in field work missions at sea.

HOW TO APPLY:
To apply to this call of an Expression of interest, please send us by mail to (Prof. Flávio Martins fmartins@ualg.pt) a detailed CV and a cover letter explaining your research path and clearly stating what would make you a suitable candidate for the position.

BENEFITS:
Full contract information is depending on the experience of the selected candidate being defined by the Portuguese Science and Technology foundation guidelines (https://dre.pt/application/file/a/75216474). The expected duration of the contract is three years.
