Applications and Innovations in Polar Marine Diatom Analysis

Marine diatoms have become increasingly applied to fundamental questions related to climate and ice sheet history in and proximal to the polar regions.

Following the IODP-USSSP-supported Polar Marine Diatom Workshop, Iowa Lakeside Laboratory, Lake Okoboji, Iowa, USA (August, 2018), Marine Micropaleontology has agreed to host a special issue entitled, “Applications and innovations in Polar Marine Diatom Analysis“.

The workshop organizing committee seeks submission of manuscripts from the international community related to marine diatoms of the Arctic and Antarctic regions. Whether you were able to participate in the recent workshop or not, we encourage submissions on research related to polar marine diatoms spanning a spectrum of research questions in oceanography, paleoceanography, sea-ice environments, plankton dynamics, diatom-based geochemical or other proxies, biostratigraphy, and evolution, especially in light of recent IODP and other polar ocean drilling.

Guest editors will include Reed Scherer (Northern Illinois University), Beth Caissie (Iowa State University), and Amy Leventer (Colgate University). Submission deadline May 15, 2019. We encourage you to contact one of the guest editors well in advance of the deadline if you are considering a submission.
