The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Natural Resources Specialist.

General Description
This is an entry-level professional position supporting the Beach and Marine Resources section programs in a wide range of multidisciplinary projects. The Beach and Marine Resources section oversees the County’s beach management program, biological monitoring, implementation of living shorelines, protected species programs, coral reefs, artificial reefs, and other programs as related to the marine environment. The position is responsible for assisting the Beach and Marine Resources programs with planning, permitting, and management of shoreline protection strategies and diverse natural resource protection/enhancement projects. The position will manage the County’s dune grant program, which includes coordinating the planning of dune restoration projects with local partners to further community resilience. The successful candidate should have experience in data processing and analysis and reviewing topographic and bathymetric surveys. The position will also manage the County’s mooring buoy program. Also required is field diving experience and the ability to work with field teams on marine assessments, which may include coral, fish, and general benthic assessments. Candidates should be highly motivated and creative, enjoy working as a team, and have superior organizational skills. Responsibilities include agency communications, contracts and grant management, invoicing, and reporting. Other tasks include presentations and public speaking along with support for outreach events. Work is reviewed through regular meeting, reports, and assignments.
The work schedule for this position 7:30 am – 4:00 pm Monday through Friday.
Performs professional environmental work enforcing the provisions of environmental ordinances as well as participating in natural resource enhancement and protection efforts.
This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Requires a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in biology, engineering, environmental/marine science, coastal zone management, geology, chemistry, or closely related field.
Requires six (6) months experience in Coastal zone management and natural resource protection or closely related experience.
Special Certifications and Licenses Required:
Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Class E driver’s license for duration of appointment. (Depending upon area of assignment)
Preferences:
Master’s or Ph.D. degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in biology, engineering, environmental/marine science, coastal zone management, geology, chemistry, or closely related field.
Ecological knowledge and understanding of the coral reef and surrounding benthic environments off SE Florida.
Experience with State and Federal coastal permitting process.
Field experience in scientific diving situations.
Experience in construction management of coastal projects, specifically beach renourishment and erosion control.
Ability to identify, to species level, corals and marine fish indigenous to coastal waters of SE Florida.
Knowledge of physical coastal processes.
Possess Rescue and Nitrox SCUBA certifications.
Experience with grants including preparation grant applications/proposals and grant administration.
Strong GIS skills including creation of GIS layers and preparation of digital maps.
Ability to operate boat up to 37 ft in length in scuba diving operations.
Strong public speaking and communication (verbal and written) skills.
