28 June – 8 July 2019 Helgoland (BAH) and on board of the RV Heincke

General Information

The Coastal Summer School 2019 on Helgoland features the 1st PORTWIMS summer school on “Marine phytoplankton diversity observations: innovative methods and industrial applications“. It will be held from 28 June to 8 July 2019 on Helgoland, Germany. The training will comprise a class room module (six days) at the guest scientist facilities on Heligoland and a practical module (five days) onboard the German RV Heincke in the German Bight. The Biologische Anstalt Helgoland (BAH) as part of the AWI is one of the oldest marine stations world wide and has a strong tradition in capacity development and hosting international guest researchers.

The Coastal Summer School 2019 will take place on the North Sea island of Helgoland, located in the German Bight. Helgoland is the only German island located in the open sea, approximately 70 kilometers from the mainland. The rocky mudflat and the 35 square kilometer large submarine cliff landscape are home to the richest flora and fauna of the German coast – an oasis. Since 1892 scientists investigate this unique environment and since 1998 the Biological Institute Helgoland belongs to the Alfred Wegener Institute.

The coastal summer school is realized in cooperation of some of the leading national centres for coastal research in Germany: Leibniz Institute for Baltic Research WarnemündeHelmholtz Centre GeesthachtAlfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers). In 2019 the main supporting partner is the PORTWIMS project and it will be held as the 1st PORTWIMS summer school.
