With important forest and marine ecosystems and levels of endemism comparable to the Galapagos Islands, Príncipe is recognised world-wide for its high biodiversity and is designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The Fundação Príncipe Trust (FPT) is one of the few established NGOs operating on the island. It was established in 2015 to promote sustainable development and biodiversity conservation, through projects that strongly focus on supporting the local community and building local capacity. This work aligns with the purposes of the Biosphere Reserve and the FPT works closely with government to support their commitment to safeguard the island’s natural and cultural heritage. FPT’s projects currently focus on sea turtle conservation, establishing and strengthening protected areas (marine and terrestrial), promoting community livelihood, ecotourism and environmental sustainability.

This is an exciting opportunity to lead the FPT’s small team (2 expatriate and 15 local staff) through a period of change in a challenging working environment on the island of Príncipe. Established by the company HBD, and after 3 years of direct support and sponsorship, the FPT is now transitioning towards being a fully self-sufficient organisation. The FPT is seeking a visionary, experienced and dynamic Director to lead the organisation through this period of change and beyond.
Reporting to the FPT Board and with direct support from partner organisations, the Director will lead on organisational direction and all aspects of management including forward strategy, the evolution of operational systems, staff management and fundraising and development. Initially, and until the organisation’s capacity has been built, you will also provide technical oversight of the FPT’s marine programme.
You will be a qualified and experienced manager, able to provide strong leadership and take responsibility for the management and development of the organisation from the outset. An effective communicator with strong people management skills, you will have the skills and experience required to build a supportive working environment and effective team. You will also have technical experience in a relevant field including biodiversity conservation and/or social development. You will have a proven track record in all aspects of programme and/or project management and will be skilled in providing advice and technical input to the design,
development, implementation and evaluation of projects. Príncipe is a small remote island; this position will suit an individual who is solutions-oriented and who enjoys working in a dynamic and challenging environment.

Start Date: 1st June or as soon as possible
Duration of contract: One-year fixed term contract, with potential to extend subject to business need and funding availability

Probation Period:
Four months

Salary range:
EUR 31,500 – EUR 36,500 depending on skills and experience (cost of living on Principe estimated at €500 per month)

This is a full-time position requiring flexible working.

The position holder will work closely with FPT colleagues and national counterparts and other stakeholders on all aspects of the job.

Key Responsibilities:
Organisational Leadership and Management
 Represent FPT at all levels, maintaining positive relationships with government, local communities, major donors and other key stakeholders and partners and attend national and regional level meetings as required.
 Ensure that FPT is managed effectively and in accordance with requirements related to registered status as an NGO and employer under São Tomé laws and regulations.
 Undertake a review of FPT’s strategy to ensure that the organisation’s purpose and direction is clearly articulated, and the strategy is used to enable the FPT team to deliver a focused and effective programme of work.
 Improve management and operational system capacities to ensure that the organisation operates efficiently.
 Ensure robust management/accounting systems and processes are in place to manage and monitor all aspects of financial activity.
 Ensure that the FPT office and other resources are managed and used to a high standard of health, safety, welfare and environmental good practice.
 Manage and motivate in-country staff through objective setting, continuous performance management and annual appraisal, training provision and personal development planning.
 Ensure that communication is effectively and regularly maintained with the FPT Board, key partners and donors.
 Monitor the financial sustainability of FPT and adapting focus and needs accordingly.

Programme Management and Development
 Subject to your skills and experience, provide technical support and advice to FPT staff across their project portfolios.
 Oversee FPT’s marine conservation programme, ensuring that the project team is working safely and effectively and to plan and budget.
 Lead on the delivery of a programme of capacity development designed to address capacity deficits within the organisation.
 Support staff to manage and administer projects on a day-to-day basis and to work with local partners to agree targets and work plans for projects, ensuring appropriate monitoring and review processes are fulfilled.
 Work with FPT and partner teams to undertake the development of new projects in line with the aims of the FPT’s strategy, including identifying prospective funders and donors and developing tailored proposals to these.
 Put in place appropriate structures for effective project monitoring and evaluation, enabling project activities to be assessed and adapted in relation to budgets,
 Support programme/project leaders with donor report writing and editing, as required, and establish a system to ensure that reports required for donors are delivered to a high standard and on time.
 Perform any other tasks that may be requested from time to time that are appropriate to your skills and experience.


 Proven successful NGO / programme team leadership
 Ability to plan and think strategically and to manage complex programmes of work
 Ability to develop and deliver conservation projects in the field
 Strong skills in programme/project management, financial management, reporting and evaluation
 Strong technical skills relating to conservation or a related field
 Proven ability to collaborate effectively with partner organisations, including governments, national and local NGOs, community groups and businesses
 Proven financial / budget management skills
 Ability to develop and maintain relationships with
donors including multi-lateral and bi-lateral agencies
and the private sector
 Strong communication skills (written and verbal), to
both technical and non-technical audiences and ability to communicate publicly and with a wide range of audiences
 Fluency in written and spoken Portuguese
 A good level of competence in written and spoken
 Ability to assess and prioritise tasks effectively to
accomplish projects to deadlines
 Fluency in English
Knowledge and experience
 A Masters’ degree or equivalent level qualification in a conservation / natural resource management or relevant social science field
 Substantial leadership experience in a relevant organisation / working environment
 Substantial relevant experience of working on conservation and / or environmental or relevant social issues
 Proven track record of managing small NGOs or similar teams of staff (up to 20 people)
 Previous experience living and working in developing country (at least 2 years)
 A strong technical background and understanding of a range of conservation issues
 Experience working at a strategic level within a small team
 Experience in leading marine conservation projects

 Experience designing and leading the delivery of institutional capacity development
 Good track record in project development and fundraising
