PhD Research Fellow in Marine Optics – Deadline 31 January 2024

There is a vacancy for a PhD Research Fellow in Marine Optics at the Department of Physics and Technology. The position is for a fixed-term period of 4 years including one year compulsory other work (e.g. teaching duties at the Department).

Are you interested in working with optics and challenges on how light is affected by particles in the water and atmosphere? We seek a motivated and skilled PhD Research Fellow to do research on optical properties in the field, the lab and by using computer models.

About the project/work tasks

The PhD project will comprise one or more of the main activities of the optics group at the Department of Physics and Technology. The project is mainly planned to be about spectral matching of remote sensing reflectance from bio-optical radiative transfer models and remote sensing sensors. Further it will be investigated where these models fail and develop look-up tables based on in situ optical measurements. In addition, the project will include improvement of atmospheric corrections of remote sensing spectra for various coastal and fjord waters. It may also be possible to develop the project in another direction within the main activities of the optics group given that we find the right candidate.

Work tasks of this PhD position will include in situ optical measurements in optically complex waters, laboratory calibration and testing of advanced optical instruments. There will be annual possibilities of going on scientific cruises, both locally near Bergen and in the arctic. There are also plans for field work in Ny-Ã…lesund, Svalbard.

Qualifications and personal qualities

  • Applicants must hold a master’s degree or equivalent education in physics, oceanography or similar. It is a condition of employment that the master’s degree has been awarded.
  • It is an advantage with experience from
    • optical measurements in situ and in the laboratory.
    • remote sensing (satellites).
    • working with computer modelling.
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and have good communication- and collaborative skills.
  • Applicants must be proficient in both written and oral English.

Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.
