PostDoc Position: Implementation of environmental DNA analyses in marine observatories – Deadline 31 October 2021

The HIFMB/AWI seek for a Postdoc (m/f/d)  in the framework of the third-party funded project ‘CREATE – Concepts for Reducing the Effects of Anthropogenic pressures and uses on marine Ecosystems and on Biodiversity’ and addresses the research mission of the The German Marine Research Alliance on ‘Protection and Sustainable Use of Marine Areas’.

With the advertised position, marine observatories will be extended by molecular genetic detection and identification methods for marine fauna in the BMBF-funded project ‘CREATE’. The focus is on the standardization of environmental DNA sampling and the establishment and management of an environmental DNA bioarchive. In addition, the Postdoc will perform exemplary species detection analyses for different animal groups in marine protected areas in the North Sea and Baltic Sea and communicate the results within ‘CREATE’ and DAM projects. The PostDoc (m/f/d) is affiliated with the HIFMB Focus Group Marine Molecular Ecology .

Tasks

  • Participation in research cruises, sampling and processing of environmental DNA in the field
  • Development of a standardized sampling method for environmental DNA for the detection of marine fauna
  • Establishment and maintenance of an environmental DNA bioarchive
  • Molecular genetic analyses (metabarcoding)
  • Bioinformatic and statistical analysis of sequence data
  • Interdisciplinary exchange of research approaches and results
  • Participation in project meetings
  • Preparation of project reports and publication of results

Requirements

  • Completed university studies (Univ.-Diploma, Master) and Phd in environmental/natural sciences, medicine or related discipline
  • Experience in molecular genetic analysis (metabarcoding)
  • Bioinformatics and statistical expertise
  • Very good communication skills
  • Very good English language skills; German language skills are an advantage
  • Experience with research cruises is advantageous
  • Publications in scientific journals

This is a part-time position (19,5h) limited to 3 years. The salary will be paid in accordance with the Collective Agreement for the Public Service of the Federation (Tarifvertrag des öffentlichen Dienstes, TVöD Bund), up to salary level 13. The place of employment will be Bremerhaven.
