Reefscapers is a marine consultancy company based in the Maldives, developing guest-oriented programs for resorts through coral reef restoration, sea turtle rehabilitation, aquaculture and coastal protection.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a motivated and out-going Marine Biologist, based at a 5-star island resort in the Maldives (details provided during interview).

As this is a brand-new role, we are looking for a confident communicator, able to work independently as the sole Reefscapers representative at this resort. Fluency in English, plus either Russian or French, is preferred.

Job Description

Coral Biology

  • Set up from scratch, operate, and maintain all aspects of the resort’s coral propagation program.
  • Conduct coral frame building, maintenance, photography, and monitoring.
  • Manage the coral frame database and photo updates for guest-sponsored frames.

Marine Biology

  • Conduct marine life presentations, guest-oriented snorkelling activities, and other marine projects.
  • Photograph and document marine life; collect data and perform data entry.
  • Create educational awareness activities, and promote coral frame sponsorship.
  • Train resort staff to increase awareness of reef regeneration and marine conservation.

Public Relations

  • Communicate conservation issues to resort guests, and engage with children of all ages.
  • Cultivate effective working relationships with all levels of resort staff and management.
  • Write monthly illustrated reports (in English) for resort management and the Reefscapers team.
  • Create content for social media and websites – photos and videos, both on land and underwater.
  • Assist with Reefscapers social media accounts to inform and engage audiences.

Ideal candidate

BSc/MSc in Marine Biology, Environmental Sciences, or similar.

  • Passionate and knowledgeable about marine science and environmental conservation.
  • Strong swimmer (essential), qualified diver (essential), experienced freediver (preferred).
  • Physically fit non-smoker, able to carry 20kg weight and work long hours in the ocean in all weathers.
  • Experience in (underwater) photography & videography, and photo/video editing.
  • Imaginative online content creator, storytelling to a wide audience.
  • Outgoing personality, positive attitude, confident at giving public presentations.
  • Creative & resourceful, with experience in managing a variety of projects simultaneously.
  • Good team-player, with an open-minded attitude and an engaging people-focused personality.
  • Proactive approach, able to discuss and promote conservation initiatives to the public and resort staff.
  • Must be able to work unsupervised, and under own initiative.
  • Experience of remote tropical island life in a customer-facing role (preferred).
  • A good standard of English is essential, but priority will be given to fluent speakers of either Russian and/or French (to align with the resort’s international clientèle).

Resort life

  • Follow the high standards of an international 5-star resort (guidelines will be provided).
  • Participate in staff orientation and training when required, from both Reefscapers and the resort.
  • Network effectively with all resort colleagues, from management, to Dive & Recreation, to Maintenance.
  • Meet & greet guests and children, to discuss Maldives marine life and Reefscapers conservation efforts.

Benefits

  • The salary for this position is $1000 USD per month, plus a small commission.
  • Includes return flights from the applicant’s point of relocation.
  • One day off per week; 36 days’ annual leave.

  • Basic DAN dive insurance (sports diver bronze).
