Open position: Scientist or DevOps Engineer for performing Climate Simulations – Deadline 28 April 2024

Background

The Climate Dynamics section of the Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) in Bremerhaven, Germany, is accepting applications for a position at the intersection of Climate Science, Software Development, and IT operations, with a focus on performing climate simulations. The role entails performing climate simulation at HPC machines, monitoring their computational and scientific performance, and automation of steps necessary for testing new model versions. Candidates with expertise in either geophysical simulations or DevOps are encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will work with leading European climate modelers, computing scientists, and software engineers on developing Digital Twins of the climate system to support adaptation to climate change.

Tasks

You will be part of the team responsible for developing, testing, and deploying km-scale climate models. Your task is to contribute to continuous testing and monitoring of the scientific and computational performance of the new model versions by running model integrations of different lengths at different spatial resolutions on EU Tier-1 HPC systems. Depending on the candidate’s profile, the further focus will be either on the scientific evaluation of simulations or on the automation of testing and deployment of models.

Requirements

At least a master’s degree or more than five years of experience in one or more of the following fields is required: software engineering, climate sciences, DevOps, meteorology, oceanography, data science, computer science, mathematics, physics, or related fields. A PhD in any of these fields would be an advantage. Demonstrated experience working with *nix systems and fluency in English are further requirements. We follow good software development practices in our work and expect candidates to have hands-on experience with version control (git), writing tests, and creating documentation.

Moreover, having one or several of the following skills would be a distinct advantage:

  • Experience with HPC systems,
  • Experience with running geophysical models, especially models of ocean, atmosphere or climate,
  • Working with containers (Docker, Singularity/Apptainer),
  • Experience with CI/CD,
  • Knowledge of Python and bash,
  • Working with geophysical data formats (netCDF, GRIB, Zarr).
