Open position: Assistant/Associate Professor position in Geological Oceanography at University of Concepcion – Deadline 30 April 2024

The Department of Oceanography at the University of Concepción, Concepción, Chile, invites applications for the Assistant/Associate Professor position in Geological Oceanography.

Candidates must hold a doctoral degree in Oceanography or related fields in Geosciences and possess experience in marine geology, geological oceanography or paleo-oceanography. We seek an academic who demonstrates excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching and has expertise and aligns the research with the ocean’s geological, geochemical, or geophysical
processes.

Areas of research include, but are not limited to:

  • Paleo-oceanography
  • Geomorphology, evolution of coastal systems, and sedimentology
  • Formation of marine reliefs and structural configuration due to plate tectonics, volcanic activity, evolution of ocean basins
  • Research on petrology and mineralogy, seismic and volcanic activity, and geomagnetism

The selected individual will be expected to teach courses at both undergraduate and graduate programs in the Department of Oceanography and supervise students’ theses. The person will also mentor and teach elective courses to motivate students to become interested in geological oceanography, an area of research underrepresented in Chile. At the minimum, two classes per
year are required.

Research responsibilities include: i) Developing, establishing, and maintaining national/international funding in her/his area of research, ii) publishing scientific work in high impact, peer-reviewed journals, and iii) Presenting research findings at national and international conferences.

Responsibilities of the position include i) Participation in university services through committees, reviews, and other academic activities. ii) Engagement with the community through university outreach programs, development and innovation, and technological transfer. An internationally selected candidate is expected to learn Spanish within a reasonable timeframe if selected.

Other desirable but not required qualifications include:

  • Postdoctoral experience
  • Proficiency in data processing and statistics
  • Experience aboard research vessels
  • Experience in teaching, mentoring students, and course design.
