The Belgian part of the North Sea is one of the busiest navigable and exploited marine regions where, among other things, sand extraction, dredging, energy extraction and coastal defense can have an impact on the soil ecosystem. A sustainable exploitation of marine resources requires a thorough knowledge of their effects on the existing biodiversity. Genetic analyzes such as DNA and eDNA metabarcoding allow to perform this biodiversity screening with a high spatio-temporal resolution. In addition, new developments in high throughput sequencing follow quickly, allowing DNA-based monitoring methods to be optimized even better. The avoidance of primers during the library preparation and the simultaneous analysis of different ecosystem groups is considered an important progress
