Orange County Coastkeeper and The Laguna Bluebelt Coalition are accepting applications for a research program in marine protected areas (MPA) of Laguna Beach, California. Applicants representing Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion are highly encouraged to apply.

The Aliso Beach Wildlife-Habitat Monitoring Project has 3 goals:

  • protect critical habitat of Aliso Beach including its estuary, watershed, and sand bar;
  • increase research, reporting, outreach, and access; and
  • include disadvantaged communities and inform government agencies.

Research assistants gain experience in field methods, outreach education, wildlife identification, and environmental regulations. You will work at the beach, have a flexible schedule, collaborate with scientists and NGOs, and have opportunities to analyze data and deliver presentations related to marine policy. Entry- and mid-level experience are welcome.

Commitment: 3 – 10 hours per week; must be available on weekends; flexible schedule with project running August – December 2022
Location: Aliso Beach and Treasure Island, Laguna Beach, California, USA

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor human-wildlife use in the vicinity of beaches, creek, watershed, and sand bar
  • Identify and observe marine mammals, birds, vessels, fishing, beach activities, and oceanographic conditions
  • Collect and enter data into the database including photos
  • Assist with creating educational materials
  • Assist in community outreach 2-3X per month, on Saturday or Sunday with Program Coordinator
  • Communicate with lifeguards, OC Parks, or CA Fish and Wildlife in person, by phone, or online about possible MPA violations
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds and work in various weather conditions, housing, and transportation will be the responsibility of the research assistant. The position is unpaid.
