GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is a foundation of public law jointly financed by the Federal Republic of Germany (90 %) and the state of Schleswig-Holstein (10 %) and is one of the internationally leading institutions in the field of marine sciences. Currently GEOMAR disposes over an annual budget of approx. 80 million Euro and has approx. 1000 employees.

The Data Science Unit at GEOMAR is offering a position for a Researcher in the field of image processing and 3D reconstruction with marine robots and cloud computing for seafloor monitoring, starting on  April 1st 2023 or soon thereafter.

The project

This position is part of the MARISPACE-X project consortium, funded in the GAIA-X context. This project aims to build a marine data space and this position contributes to the use case “Marine Munition” by developing standardized image processing and machine-learning methods to be deployed on marine robots for detection and classification of objects on the seafloor (e.g. fauna, munition, habitats). The MARISPACE-X project is a joint effort with other research institutes (CAU Kiel, Uni Rostock, Fraunhofer IGD) and industry partners (IONOS, TrueOcean, north.io, etc.).

Job Description

In this position you will be responsible for:

  • Development and implementation of an integrated processing pipeline from image edge computing on deep sea robots over mobile GPU clusters at sea to GAIA-X cloud computing environments
  • Development of methods for detection and classification of objects in 3D data
  • Application of the developed methods to selected seafloor image data sets
  • FAIR publication of image data and 3D reconstructions
  • Publication of research results in relevant media

Your qualifications are

  • You have a degree (Bachelor, Master, Diplom, PhD, …) in mathematics, informatics, engineering, or the natural sciences
  • You have a strong background in programming in Python, C++, or similar
  • You are experienced in computational image processing and 3D reconstruction
  • You are familiar with GPU computing
  • You feel home in a multinational working group of natural scientists and computer scientists and enjoy working in a team
  • You can stick to deadlines and can organize yourself to meet those in a complex project environment
  • Additional qualifications in some of the following fields are welcome: edge computing, metadata standards, (marine) robotics, seagoing experience, and agile project management in teams

Our offers

  • A working place at one of the world-leading marine research centers
  • You will work in a vibrant, multinational, and multidisciplinary environment
  • You advance the state-of-the-art in marine science by pushing the limits of current technical feasibility and contributing new data science capacity to the world
  • You will see your coding in action and will discuss further advancements or ‘how to get it work properly’ together with colleagues
  • Excellent computational facilities at GEOMAR, the Christian-Albrechts University Kiel and Helmholtz Computing centers
  • A flexible, dynamic and open working environment with friendly colleagues
  • The chance to join marine research cruises and see data generation in action
  • The chance to provide solutions for the societal challenge of dumped munition in the oceans

The position is available for a funding until end of year 2025. The salary depends on qualification and could be up to the class E13 TVöD-Bund of the German tariff for public employees.
