Background

Managing research data in a FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable) manor is one of the key tasks in nowadays’ environmental research. The Data Division of the Computing and Data Centre at Alfred Wegener Institute works on modern data workflows complying with the FAIR data principle and supports scientific users and projects in implementing these workflows. The candidate will contribute to bring FAIR data management concepts to two EU projects: TechOceanS and AtlantECO. TechOceanS aims to develop environmental monitoring systems. The technologies developed will expand our knowledge of the ocean’s interconnected systems and provide tangible benefits to the industries that rely on them, such as fisheries and aquaculture. AtlantECO aims to develop and apply a novel, unifying framework that provides knowledge-based resources for a better understanding and management of the Atlantic Ocean and its ecosystem services.

Tasks

  • Coordination and management of the TechOceanS’ work package “Cross-cutting technologies and testing: concepts and prototypes”
  • Conception, organisation and implementation of the TechOceanS’ work package “Cross-cutting technologies and testing: Validation with representative environment / data”
  • Coordination of the AtlantECO’s deliverable “Report describing a list of putative predictors and indicators” to generate indicators about ecosystem status, dynamics and health, and predictions about the capacity of ecosystems to provide services
  • Conception and organisation of the data flow from raw data of the partners’ monitoring systems to analysis and processing services, and to data repositories
  • Conception, organisation and implementation of data management best practices in platforms such as OBPS (Ocean Best Practices System)
  • Support partners in managing sensor’s metadata
  • Conception and implementation of converters / application interfaces to make the project’s systems and data harvestable by meta platforms such as Ocean Info Hub

Requirements

  • Degree in natural or engineering sciences with programming skills and PhD
  • Experience in project management of national and international scientific projects related to data management
  • Knowledge of international standards and technologies for the exchange of scientific data such as metadata standards, ontologies and persistent identifiers
  • Knowledge in the organisation and implementation of scientific data management in the context of networks for long-term ecosystem monitoring is desirable
  • Experience in presenting project results at national and international conferences, workshops and meetings
  • Willingness to travel to national and international conferences and meetings
  • Fluent English language skills (written and spoken)
