VLIZ is hiring, for immediate employment, a data manager to conduct data management activities within several marine biodiversity projects (STRAITS, Pelfish) and the larger data management strategies of VLIZ. In doing so, the data manager will be part of the ‘Local Services & Projects’ branch of the VMDC, which specializes in providing data services to researchers, institutes and projects that focus on the Belgian Part of the North Sea and the Scheldt Estuary.

The Flanders Marine Data Centre (VMDC), specializes in the provision of all types of high-quality scientific data, through a multitude of data management activities and maintained information platforms. These activities are conducted as support for marine sciences in Belgium, either as generic data services or within large number of regional, national and international research projects. Such projects are often related to large-scale data portals such as ETN and ScheldeMonitor.

Your tasks

  • Storage, description and management of biodiversity data;
  • Translation of scientific data towards relevant and meaningful data products;
  • Processing requests from users making use of the different data services of VMDC;
  • Improving institutional knowledge and best-practices for all types of scientific data;
  • Project management, reporting and communication in English.

Your profile

  • A Master’s degree in Marine Sciences or equivalent experience in scientific and marine data;
  • Experience in data management or equivalent aspirations to gain competence;
  • Ability to work independently and in team;
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of FAIR and Open Science principles.

Following skills are considered an asset:

  • Skills in R, Python or other programming languages;
  • Affinity with biodiversity data;
  • Affinity with carbon data;
  • Experience in Big Data and Machine-Learning;
  • Experience in report writing and project management.
