Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution’s Ocean Science Journalism (OSJ) Fellowship offers professional science writers, producers, and editors working for print, broadcast, radio, and digital media the residential experience at a leading ocean research institution. Created in 2000, the program is designed to introduce science journalists to the interdisciplinary and wide-ranging fields of oceanography and ocean engineering.
Four and a half days packed with lectures, seminars, laboratory sessions and ventures out in the field, the fellowship gives participants the chance to gain access to new insight on fundamental ocean-related areas of research, including engineering, marine biology, geology and geophysics, marine chemistry and geochemistry, and physical oceanography.
The ideal candidates will have at least two years of writing, producing, or editing experience for a general-interest audience. Preference to those with a scientific background or science-focused beat.
WHOI covers room and board during the program. Fellows will receive a travel allowance of $1,200.
Application Information
Applications are accepted starting June 28, 2021, and must be received by August 13, 2021. A total of 8 fellows will be accepted.

- One page letter stating why you want to attend this program and what you hope to gain from it
- Three samples of professional work, ideally completed within the past two years. (Uploaded articles should be in the form of PDFs or direct web links to specific work samples).

Print Journalists:Â Please avoid reducing text size for submissions. Submit one chapter instead of whole books. Make sure all submissions are clearly marked with your name. Editors should indicate their involvement in the selected piece.
Broadcast Journalists:Â Submit direct links to reels or samples. Directors and producers should indicate their involvement in the broadcast. Suggested run time: 3-3:30 min.
Multimedia Journalists, Photographers, and Artists:Â Submit samples of stories, graphics, photographs, artwork, or illustrations. We ask that you submit these digitally and provide direct links.
