Background

At the centre of the project “Storyline Scenarios of Extreme Weather, Climate, and Environmental Events along with their Impacts in a Warmer World” (SCENIC) is to develop further and apply a new model approach that enables us to investigate how specific extreme weather events observed in the recent past would unfold in different climates. Storyline scenarios complement the classic approach to investigating the influence of the climate on extreme events and have the potential to make climate change more tangible and provide an additional knowledge base for adaptation measures. SCENIC is a cross-institutional project of research field Earth and Environment of Germany’s Helmholtz Association. As part of the advertised position, storyline simulations will be carried out with the coupled AWI climate model. In addition to our own analysis, the resulting data shall also serve the project partners at the other centres as a basis for various types of impact studies.

Tasks

You will contribute:

  • to the planning, implementation and evaluation of storyline simulations with the AWI climate model, including optimisation of the nudging parameters;
  • to the processing and provision of the simulation data for the project partners, as well as the data archiving;
  • to the writing of scientific publications, also in cooperation with the project partners, and the presentation of the results at scientific conferences;
  • to writing project reports and disseminating the results to a wider public.

Requirements

  • PhD in one of the following areas: meteorology, oceanography, climate science, physics, mathematics, or similar.

Desirable skills and knowledge

  • Proven programming skills (especially Python and/or R, Shell, FORTRAN)
  • excellent knowledge of English and writing skills
  • experience with complex atmosphere/ocean/sea-ice models, as well as a strong publication record, are decisive advantages
  • the ability to develop your own research questions and to tackle both scientific and technical challenges individually while working well as part of a team is important.
