The School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences invites applications for the Postdoctoral Associate/Senior Postdoctoral position. The title/rank will be contingent upon the selected candidate’s skills and experience in their area of expertise. A Postdoctoral Associate / Senior Postdoctoral Associate is needed to conduct research in Marine Genomics and/or Shellfish Genomics.

Postdoctoral Associate
Required Qualifications (as evidenced by attached resume):
Doctoral Degree or foreign equivalent degree in biological sciences or related field in hand by December 31, 2021.

Preferred Qualifications:
Doctoral Degree (or foreign equivalent) in an area related to genomics. Experience in Marine Genomics and/or Shellfish genomics. Experience with high performance computing. Extensive training in Genomics and Bioinformatics.

Brief Description of Duties:
The Postdoctoral Associate will conduct research in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences under the supervision of Principal Investigator, Dr. Bassem Allam in SoMAS’s Marine Animal Disease Laboratory (MADL). The Postdoctoral Associate will assist in the analysis of large scale genomics sequences (RNASeq, RADSeq) to answer questions pertaining to the molecular mechanisms associated with the resilience of bivalve mollusks to pathogenic and environmental stress.  The successful candidate will show evidence of creativity and high productivity.

Postdoctoral Associate duties will include:

  • Within the predetermined research scope, carry out research that allows the identification of genetic features and molecular pathways associated with bivalve resilience and response to environmental (e.g. ocean acidification, high temperature, low dissolved oxygen) and pathogenic stress. This includes planning and study design, wet lab experimentation with mollusks, nucleic acid extraction, high-throughput sequencing and data analysis using modern bioinformatics tools.
  • Contribute to the training of students and interns.
  • Work with Principal Investigator to build and submit research proposals for external funding agencies and participate in manuscript writing for publication in scientific journals. Prepare activity and progress reports to funding agencies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Senior Postdoctoral Associate
Required Qualifications (as evidenced by attached resume):
Doctoral Degree or foreign equivalent degree in biological sciences or related field in hand by December 31, 2021. Three (3) years of full-time related research experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
Doctoral Degree (or foreign equivalent) in an area related to genomics. Experience in Marine Genomics and/or Shellfish genomics. Extensive training in Genomics and Bioinformatics. Mastery of modern bioinformatics tools. Experience with high performance computing.

Brief Description of Duties:
The Senior Postdoctoral Associate will conduct research in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences under the supervision of Principal Investigator, Dr. Bassem Allam in SoMAS’s Marine Animal Disease Laboratory (MADL), working on highly complex, and technically broad challenges and problems such as the analysis of large scale genomics sequences (RNASeq, RADSeq, Genomes assembly and annotation) to answer questions pertaining to the molecular mechanisms associated with the resilience of bivalve mollusks to pathogenic and environmental stress.  The successful candidate will show evidence of creativity and high productivity.

Senior Postdoctoral Associate duties will include:

  • Conduct research that allows the identification of genetic features and molecular pathways associated with bivalve resilience and response to environmental (e.g. ocean acidification, high temperature, low dissolved oxygen) and pathogenic stress. This includes planning and study design, wet lab experimentation with mollusks, nucleic acid extraction, high-throughput sequencing and data analysis using modern bioinformatics tools.
  • Responsible for training students and interns in the MADL.
  • Write research proposals for external funding agencies and participate in manuscript writing for publication in scientific journals. Prepare activity and progress reports to funding agencies.
  • Provide expert consultation to SoMAS colleagues and students, and demonstration of proper execution and interpretation of novel genomics methods and techniques.
  • Other duties as assigned
