The research unit Marine Biogeochemical Modelling of research division 2 – Marine Biogeochemistry is offering a Postdoc modelling physical-biogeochemical interactions of ocean alkalinity enhancement, starting on March 1st, 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Project Description

Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) is needed to limit climate change. The consortium style international research project “OCEAN ALK-ALIGN: Aligning Ocean alkalinity for sustainable, safe and verifiable long-term CO2 removal” will investigate the potential of ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) as a means of CDR. OCEAN ALK-ALIGN aims to close existing knowledge gaps by investigating three aspects essential for possible OAE implementation: (1) the efficiency and permanence of CO2 removal; (2) environmental safety; (3) monitoring and verification.

Job Description

Initial work will focus on modelling alkaline mineral dissolution and the mixing of alkaline solutions in seawater at small scales (centimetres to hundreds of meters) to help determine optimal OAE deployment approaches. This includes investigating the rates of mixing and advection needed to avoid secondary precipitation for different additions (fluxes) of alkalinity. Subsequent work will focus on developing parameterizations for implementation in coarser resolution models to bridge the gaps in what different models can resolve in regards to ocean physics, biogeochemistry and possible impacts on marine ecosystems when simulating OAE.

The candidate is expected to collaborate with other researchers in OCEAN ALK-ALIGN. Publishing results and contributing to interdisciplinary publications, reports, and synthesis products is expected.

Qualification

We are looking for a creative and committed scientist with PhD in a natural sciences subject and extensive knowledge of hydrodynamical modelling, preferentially in simulating ocean physical-biogeochemical hydrodynamic interactions. Knowledge of carbon dioxide removal approaches, especially ocean alkalinity enhancement will be beneficial. Experience in working as part of an interdisciplinary team would be helpful.

Required:

  • A PhD in a natural science subject
  • Experience in marine hydrodynamical modelling
  • Good knowledge of ocean hydrodynamics and marine carbonate chemistry
  • Willingness to work with external partners as well as to present results at international conferences
  • Excellent English language skills (oral and written)

Desired qualifications:

  • Experience in working with an interdisciplinary team
  • Experience with simulating physical-biogeochemical hydrodynamic interactions at a small scale
  • Experience investigating ocean alkalinity enhancement as a carbon dioxide removal approach

The position is available for a funding period of up to three years. The salary depends on qualification and could be up to the class 13 TVöD-Bund of the German tariff for public employees. This is a full-time position. The position is basically divisible. Flexible working time models are possible in principle.
