Background
The dissertation project is part of the DFG project AISA (“Advancing ice altimetry analysis to constrain the Antarctic Ice Sheet’s response to climate change”). The doctoral candidate (male / female) will join the Section Glaciology of the AWI in Bremerhaven, an interdisciplinary group of scientists aiming to develop new approaches to quantify the mass loss of ice sheets and its contribution to sea level change. The candidate will have access to AWI’s computing infrastructure, including a HPC cluster (CPU), as well as infrastructure for AI applications (GPU).
Tasks
Develop AI methods to generate altitude distribution maps from raw point clouds to derive elevation change estimates of Antarctica
Comparison with conventional methods
Application to satellite-based altimetry data sets over Antarctica
Publication of the method and its application in scientific journals and conference contributions
Requirements
Completed studies in geodesy, electrical engineering, computer science, applied mathematics or data science with a focus on AI
Desirable skills and knowledge
Experience in the field of AI methods, e.g. DL, for point clouds or signal processing
