Application for Senior Researcher: Effects of underwater noise on marine mammals – Deadline 15 November 2021

Noise from ships and offshore construction work is intensifying worldwide, as is the need to understand how this influences marine life.

At Aarhus University we seek a highly talented senior researcher with strong analytical skills to investigate the impacts of underwater noise on marine systems, and to further our understanding of the effects of noise on health, behaviour, distribution, and population dynamics of marine mammals.

The successful candidate will join a strong research team that has worked on acquiring underwater sound data and on investigating impacts of underwater noise on seals and harbour porpoises over the last two decades. The candidate is expected to develop an independent research profile related to impacts of disturbances on marine mammals and systems and to be able to acquire external funding to support this work.

The position offers opportunity to participate in research based on a combination of underwater sound data, animal tracking data and passive acoustic monitoring data, and to develop new projects related to quantifying the effects on underwater noise on marine life.

The researcher will be expected to contribute actively in the department’s advisory activities for the Danish Ministry of Environment, public and private companies, related to effects of underwater noise. The researcher is also expected to attract graduate students and/or post docs.

Required skills
• A PhD (or equivalent) in biology, engineering, physics, oceanography or related fields.
• A strong understanding of, and proven experience with, analysis of acoustic data.
• Proven experience with impact of sound on marine organisms (marine mammals, fish or other).
• Considerable experience with scientific writing and a strong publication record.
• Excellent written and spoken English.
• Strong analytical skills
• Good track record for attracting external funding.
• Experience with fieldwork related to marine mammals and/or underwater acoustics.

Central for the position is a genuine interest in research and advisory work related to effects of underwater noise and anthropogenic disturbances in general, documented through prior experience. Mastering Danish in speech and writing is an advantage.

The position will be based on the AU campus in Roskilde, at Frederiksborgvej 399, DK-4000 Roskilde.

Please contact Jakob Tougaard (phone: +45 8715 8706‬) or Jacob Nabe-Nielsen (+45 8715 8696) for additional information.

The application deadline is 15 November 2021 and the expected start date is 1 June 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Application procedure

Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

Letter of reference

If you want a referee to upload a letter of reference on your behalf, please state the referee’s contact information when you submit your application. We strongly recommend that you make an agreement with the person in question before you enter the referee’s contact information, and that you ensure that the referee has enough time to write the letter of reference before the application deadline.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to ensure that letters of reference received after the application deadline will be taken into consideration.
