ASU BIOS invites applications from qualified candidates for a full-time, 12-month, non-tenure track Assistant Teaching Professor position for marine biology and marine ecology programs provided at ASU BIOS. Subsequent appointments may be offered on an annual basis, under the same terms and conditions, at the discretion of the university and contingent upon availability of resources. We seek broadly trained candidates with expertise in sub-tropical and tropical marine biology. The position is anticipated to begin in summer 2024. Salary will be commensurate with experience. The successful candidate will be based full-time in Bermuda at the ASU BIOS campus.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
ASU BIOS has a long record of offering experiential learning opportunities for students by providing immersive courses in marine science that exploit the unique location and environment of Bermuda. The candidate is expected to coordinate, execute, and continue to develop a comprehensive academic program in marine biology and marine ecology, primarily at the undergraduate level, with a focus on the sub-tropical marine environment. Current courses offered at ASU BIOS range from 3-week summer courses to full semester programs taught in conjunction with international university partners. In addition to courses, we also hosts a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate research interns each year, including the NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program.
The successful candidate will be required to teach a variety of courses, including Introductory Marine Ecology, Coral Reef Ecology, and Marine Invertebrate Zoology, and to supervise undergraduate research and laboratory activities. The role will also include co-ordination of the REU program at ASU BIOS. Additional new courses may be developed to serve the needs of the rapidly evolving and growing academic programs at ASU BIOS. The Director of Education for University Programs at ASU BIOS and existing instructors will work with the candidate to identify any new course needs. Some opportunities may be available for the successful applicant to engage in research activities, but the primary focus of this position is teaching.
Minimum Qualifications
- Applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree in marine biology/ecology from an accredited college or university

- Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with students, staff, and faculty from diverse backgrounds, programs, and universities/colleges
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Knowledgeable of use and application of common equipment and instrumentation in marine biology

- Experience of course development, student-centered support, academic service, communication, and commitment to diversity
- Grant development
- SCUBA certification
- Small boat handling skills
