About the role
An exciting opportunity has opened up to support the expanding portfolio of NOC research projects which are conducting blue carbon inventories and generating a better understanding of carbon sequestration by coastal vegetated habitats. The role of Coastal Blue Carbon Researcher will augment the Ocean BioGeochemistry team and support the research group of Dr Claire Evans. The majority of the post will be dedicated to supporting the two NOC-led Sustainable Management of Marine Resources projects, namely ReSOW UK and Co-Opt which are both based in the UK. However, the role will also support the wider portfolio of Blue Carbon research which encompasses projects around the world such as the Commonwealth Marine Economies Programme. The focus of the role will be to conduct Blue Carbon Inventories of seagrass beds and other coastal habitats using extent and emissions data via tools such as the as InVEST (Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Trade-offs) model. The successful candidate will also be required to participate in fieldwork to collect sediment cores from seagrass beds and to conduct geochemical analysis of core samples via techniques such as Isotopic Ratio Mass Spectrometry. The role offers unique potential to work in close partnership with those who govern, manage and use the coast, thus building the successful candidate’s network and awareness of the associated policy and socioeconomic landscape.
About you
We seek an early career researcher who has, or is about to be awarded with, a PhD in a relevant field. You will have the capacity to conduct blue carbon inventories (or similar natural capital assessments) integrating extent data (land use land cover) and emissions data (carbon stocks and fluxes). You will have the required skills to use the InVEST -Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Trade-offs model, or other similar models which requires intermediate or higher GIS skills. The candidate will participate in field campaigns both nationally in the UK and overseas to collect samples in coastal vegetated habitats and determine emission data, (such as carbon stocks and sequestration rates as well as greenhouse gas emissions). Competency in analytical biogeochemistry is beneficial, as the candidate will be required to process samples using approaches such as Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry, although full training and support will be given. A willingness to participate in fieldwork is essential, as is an ability to swim and participate in sediment core collection. Diving qualifications are not necessary. You will have a publication record suited to your career stage. We seek a highly self-motivated candidate who prioritizes excellence in balance with the need to meet deadlines, and works successfully as part of team, as well as possessing the initiative to function independently when required. Enthusiasm and skills in engaging a diverse range of stakeholders would be beneficial.
