GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is a foundation of public law jointly financed by the Federal Republic of Germany (90 %) and the state of Schleswig-Holstein (10 %) and is one of the internationally leading institutions in the field of marine sciences. Currently GEOMAR disposes over an annual budget of approx. 80 million Euro and has approx. 1000 employees.

Project Description

We are looking for candidates with a strong interest in modelling marine biogeochemical cycles and their role in the Earth system. The research project will focus on better quantifying the potential of artificial upwelling (ArtUp) to increase the uptake of anthropogenic CO2 by the ocean. A particular focus will be on the role of non-Redfield carbon uptake associated with ArtUp, separation of the role of different marine carbon pumps in ArtUp, and its climate-path sensitivity. The research will be conducted with an Earth system model of intermediate complexity so that links and possible feedbacks between regionally simulated ArtUp and the global Earth system can be investigated. The project is part of a joint research initiative including research ranging from experimental biogeochemical work to economic analysis of artificial upwelling.

Qualification

We are looking for a creative and ambitious modeller with a university degree at the M.Sc. or Diploma level in a natural sciences subject and knowledge of biogeochemical or Earth system modelling. Coding skills in fortran, ferret, matlab, python or similar computing languages and familiarity with script based working on linux platforms are welcome.

The position is available for a funding period of 36 months. The salary depends on qualification and could be up to the class E13 TVöD-Bund of the German tariff for public employees. This is a part-time position according to 75 % of a full-time equivalent. The position can not be split, flexible working time models are possible in principle.
