Atlantic & Arctic Lighthouse Weekly Hour on restoration of degraded coastal habitats: The Vejle Fjord case study – 17 April 2024, online

Join us and participate in an enriching webinar with Rune Steinfurth scheduled for April 17, 2024,  2-3 PM CET. He will guide us through the topic of marine restoration of degraded coastal habitats and highlight the Vejle Fjord case study. Coastal habitats have degraded in Denmark due to eutrophication and overexploitation of marine resources. Some of the changes in habitat quality are irreversible without active restoration, while other habitats require a helping hand due to state changes in the coastal ecosystems. Rune will present a holistic approach to marine habitat restoration in the Vejle Fjord, where  multiple restoration approaches were applied to restore seascape mosaics of coastal habitats. The project team restored seagrass (Zostera marina), mussel reefs (Mytilus edulis) and boulder reefs and used targeted fishery to minimize the huge population of destructive Green crabs (Carcinus maenas) in Vejle Fjord, Denmark. By sharing insights from the Vejle Fjord case study, this Weekly Hour episode aims to foster collective learning and support the achievement of the objectives of the Mission Ocean & Waters.

Programme (CET):

  • 14h00-14h05: Introduction: Valerie de Liedekerke (BlueMissionAA / AIR Centre)
  • 14h05-14h35: Marine restoration of degraded coastal habitats: The Vejle Fjord case study,  Rune Steinfurth (Faculty of Science, Department of Biology, University of Southern Denmark)
  • 14h35-15h00: Q&A, moderated by Valerie de Liedekerke (BlueMissionAA / AIR Centre)

Speaker:

Rune Steinfurth is a postdoctoral researcher with expertise in coastal ecology and habitat restoration. His doctoral research focused on testing different marine restoration approaches to enhance environmental conditions and faunal diversity in Danish estuaries. Rune has experience as a graduate research and teaching assistant focusing on marine restoration ecology, including seagrass restoration.
