CyanoLakes (Pty) Ltd. is an award-winning [1] startup that uses space-based remote sensing,
coupled with cutting-edge technology, to provide its customers with information to improve
the health, safety and management of water resources around the globe. Our company
vision is “to be a leading provider of operational services and value-added products to the
commercial and public sector for water quality based on satellite earth observation, with
global coverage and market reach, significantly increasing the use of earth observation
derived information for water health, safety and management”[2]. CyanoLakes (Pty) Ltd.
was founded in 2015 by Dr. Mark Matthews with a vision to substantially increase the use of
earth observation in peoples daily lives to reduce the risks posed by cyanobacteria blooms
in water bodies. CyanoLakes has received international recognition for its business idea, and
is currently funded by the Water Research Commission on several projects deemed of
strategic national significance in the Republic of South Africa.

Job description
CyanoLakes is looking for a postdoctoral level graduate with expertise in earth observations
(ocean colour and remote sensing). This will be an opportunity to work in a dynamic work
environment with an award-winning startup SME.

The employee will need to be confirmable and competent in engaging customers and clients
to adequately understand their requirements; be competent to assist in the further
development of ocean colour products and algorithms; have a proven track record of
competency in programming languages specifically Python; have knowhow in algorithm
validation protocols and field work; be an innovative, independent thinker through clear
evidence of research output; be comfortable with international travel; and competent in
project management tasks, including communication activities, where necessary.

The candidate will be given opportunities for career development including for academic
publishing, student supervision, to develop a work portfolio around their own aligned
research interests.

The candidate should be able to work independently with the opportunity to work flexible
hours and remotely. The location of the employment is Cape Town, South Africa. The
candidate must have either a working visa or permanent residence in the Republic of South
Africa: no relocation expenses will be considered. The candidate must have native or
equivalent fluency in the English language.

Remuneration
The full-time contract is fixed at 21 months with remuneration in line with experience, and
subject to the terms and conditions of the contract of employment.
