The West P&I Seagoing Science Bursary provides financial support that will enable students and early career researchers in the field of marine science or oceanography, or those from developing countries who are keen to become involved in the field of marine science or oceanography, to gain practical experience of sea-going science.

Due to COVID-19 the 2021 bursary experience will take place in virtual form, consisting of 2 exclusive NOC workshops in May 2021 followed by a 6-month mentor opportunity with a NOC scientist specialising in your area of interest. The workshops will include a 3D tour of RRS Discovery and an opportunity to engage with a range of NOC scientists. You will hear about their experiences, careers and current research and have the opportunity to ask questions and share ideas. All recipients of the virtual bursary will receive a completion certificate and priority access to our 2022 sea-going bursary application process.

Our 2021 Bursaries are awarded to 5 individuals through a competitive selection process and you can apply for one using the form below.  It is therefore essential that the Bursary applicants are registered as students, or employed as researchers for the period of the Bursary, and that permission for the visit is given by supervisors or line managers (as appropriate). To be eligible for a West P&I Bursary as a student, you must be in postgraduate education (Masters level or PhD).

Applicants are encouraged to contact NOC to discuss the application before submitting. You can send an email to WestPandIBursary@noc.ac.uk and we will answer your queries or put you in touch with suitable researchers at NOC who can help.

The deadline for applications is 9th April 2021. Any applications received after this date unfortunately will not be considered.

Please send your completed application form and your CV by email to WestPandIBursary@noc.ac.uk
