The Project SHAREMED
SHAREMED focuses on increasing the capabilities to assess and address hazards related to pollution and environmental threats in Mediterranean transnational waters. This goal will be achieved by sharing knowledge, observations and technologies as well as building common frameworks, tools and services to assess and possibly forecast impacts of environmental threats to the marine ecosystems. Project Consortium includes organizations/universities/ research institutions from Italy, Spain, Slovenia, Montenegro, France, Malta, Croatia and Portugal.
The transference of tools, knowledge and procedures developed and implemented during the work packages “Studying” and “Testing” will be achieved through specific lessons with attendees from the MED area but also considering countries along the southern coast of the Mediterranean, since they impact the Mediterranean waters and are impacted by Mediterranean environmental threats. The main Sharemed results are: (i) Shared data base, assessment procedures and jointly produced atlas of products; (ii) Shared portals for existing observation capabilities; (iii) Implementation of relocatable short term forecast systems; (iv) Assessment on potentialities of new technologies and action plans for environmental threats and pollution.
The School
The Sharemed Summer School will provide:
(i) lectures on environmental threats and observing systems developed in and for the Mediterranean area;
(ii) opportunities for working on real data and the developed assessment procedures and case studies;
(iii) hands-on in sampling and lab work to promote mutual knowledge transfer.
The Summer School will also be showcasing the project approach, from the description of project challenge, results, and adopted tools. The school consists of four full teaching days and one workshop day. Each teaching day will include a morning of lectures and an afternoon of hands-on field or lab work. The school will take advantage of the unique and integrated facilities offered by IPMA.
The School program includes:
- Interactive lectures by world-renowned experts in the field of marine hazards and observatory systems from the Mediterranean Area;
- Hands-on field studies and laboratory protocols targeting environmental threats as harmful algal blooms, non-indigenous species, microplastics and other contaminants in the marine environment from the Portuguese coast;
- Experience working with biophysical data in ocean modelling systems and performing data analysis;
- Participation in the Portuguese Sharemed Capitalization Workshop whose objectives are the engagement of stakeholders and authorities to jointly define regional strategies to build future roadmaps for marine monitoring.

Target participants
Considering the multi-disciplinary nature of the school, we are expecting to cover a cross sector range of participants from the Mediterranean region including Portugal, as young researchers and PhD students, Post-docs, Master and undergraduate students, data scientists, environmental managers as well as mid-career professionals. The participants need to have a scientific and/or technical background in ocean observation systems or in marine threats assessment, interested in expanding their field of interest.
Applicants who are in a position to disseminate the experience gained from the school to others will be favoured. Preference is given to the candidates of the North African countries. Two applications are specifically dedicated to war refugees from universities/research institutions from Ukraine, and currently studying or working in Portugal. All teaching will be done in English. Travel, accommodation and meals will be paid by the project Sharemed for the selected participants.

Selection criteria
The selection will be based on the CV, the motivation for application and its relevance to SHAREMED objectives. The selection will be done by the members of the Organising Committee and the candidates will be notified about the final results by e-mail. The list of the successful candidates will be also posted on the dedicated school web-site.
Financial conditions
There are no fees or bench charges to be paid for participation. The participants (máx 20) travel (e.g. air fare ticket), accommodation and meals to attend the school will be purchased directly by the School organization. This is only applied for the registrations until 31 May 2022.
For later registrations we cannot guarantee travel nor accommodation.
