Overview

The Master in Marine Biodiversity, Fisheries and Conservation is the first professional master’s degree in this area in Portugal. This master’s degree is geared towards the promotion of lifelong learning and is born out of the need to promote in the labour market, professionals with knowledge and technical skills in areas linked to the management of the marine and coastal environment and the use of scientific information to ensure sustainable development and the conservation of species and habitats for the benefit of humanity and the balance of ecosystems.

Objectives

  • To develop skills that help professional progression and innovation in areas involving the use of biological and oceanographic information for the understanding, management and conservation of marine biodiversity and its interactions with fisheries and global change
  • To respond to needs and gaps in experience identified by employers in these areas and in regions with which the University of Algarve has links, partnerships and research projects
  • To focus on conservation measures and sustainable management of marine biodiversity exploitation activities, conservation, mitigation and restoration of threatened marine species and habitats, and integration of predictions of climate change effects and other environmental changes

Tuition and Fees 2022/2023

  • National Students: 697 Euros
  • International Students*: 4000 Euros
  • Application Fee: 50 Euros
  • Registration Fee and School Insurance: 175 Euros

Note: The  tuition of this course can be paid in 10 installments, being the first at the time of registration and the remaining in the months of October, November, December, January, February, March, April, May and June.

We provide fellowships to African students, funded by Aga-Khan project MARAFRICA to help with lodging costs during the 3 months when the students are having classes in the Algarve (Oct-Nov-Dec)

Conditions of access

  • Minimum previous professional experience of five years, duly proven;
  • Holders of a foreign higher academic degree that is recognized as meeting the objectives of the licentiate degree by the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Sciences and Technologies of UALG

Criteria for selection of the candidates

  • academic, scientific and professional curriculum;
  • motivation for attending the Master program, expressed through a letter of motivation, which must be written in English;
  •  A face-to-face or remote (online) interview in English may be required.

Necessary documentation

  • Curriculum Vitae (with personal, academic and professional details)
  •  Identity card or citizen card or other identification document in the case of foreign applicants;
  •  The application process is instructed exclusively by uploading the required documents to the platform.

We also invite you to participate in the training of these students, either interacting online or via pre-recorded seminars. If you are interested please send me the topic in which you would be interested to provide a seminar related to the research conducted by you or your institution in the theme “marine biodiversity, fisheries and conservation”
