General Information
The Coastal Summer School 2024 on Helgoland features the DAM project SustainMare. It will be held from 2 to 13 September 2024 on Helgoland, Germany. The training will comprise lectures, hands on modules with excursions in the guest scientist facilities on Heligoland. The Biologische Anstalt Helgoland (BAH) as part of the AWI is one of the oldest marine stations world wide and has a strong tradition in capacity development and hosting international guest researchers.
The Coastal Summer School 2024 will take place on the North Sea island of Helgoland, located in the German Bight. Helgoland is the only German island located in the open sea, approximately 70 kilometers from the mainland. The rocky mudflat and the 35 square kilometer large submarine cliff landscape are home to the richest flora and fauna of the German coast – an oasis. Since 1892 scientists investigate this unique environment and since 1998 the Biological Institute Helgoland belongs to the Alfred Wegener Institute.
The coastal summer school is realized in cooperation of some of the leading national centres for coastal research in Germany: Leibniz Institute for Baltic Research Warnemünde, Helmholtz Centre Geesthacht, Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers). In 2024 the main supporting partner is the Sustain Mare project.

Preliminary programme:
- Presentation of the Sustain Mare research mission
- Possible multi-use concepts (e.g. Aquaculture)
- Challenges (e.g. noise, wind and flow change, impact on marine mammals or birds)
- Information on offshore windfarms from RWE
- Legal aspects of the planning and utilisation of offshore wind farms
- Sustainability of offshore windparks
- Long term data series Helgoland roads
- Excursion including sampling (Possible tour of a wind farm)
Venue
Helgoland is the only German island located in the open sea, approximately 70 kilometers from the mainland.
Each lecture room provides several tanks with seawater connections for cultivation of living organisms in a flow-through system. The course room is also equipped with a fume hood. An additional cultivation room is provided in the basement of the Institute. Both lecture rooms have a small library (ca. 100 books), comprising the most pertinent identification keys and mainly phycology and ecology text books. A state of the art multimedia system is available in both course rooms. Two microscopes are connected to cameras and a beamer for presentations is also available. Camera images from the microscopes can be viewed on large wall screens either simultaneously or individually. A whiteboard has also been installed in both course rooms. Special paper and drying ovens are provided for those courses, which prepare herbariums on field-collected algae.
Eligibility
We are aiming for Phd students, young researchers working already in the field, and Msc grades. The Coastal Summer School is free of charge, accommodation will be provided (double rooms). We are trying to make some travel grants available.
