The Department of Marine Sciences (marine.gu.se) is Sweden’s most complete environment for marine research and marine education, and is one of only a few such organizations in Europe. The University of Gothenburg has excellent infrastructure facilities including instrumentation and platforms, two large research stations, and a new 49m research ship with modern instrumentation that will come into service during 2017 (www.loven.gu.se). The University’s researchers also have access to the ice-breaker Oden for polar research (www.polar.se). The Department of Marine Sciences, which was formed in 2015, brings together expertise in oceanography, marine chemistry, marine biology, marine geology, and marine conservation. The department hence enjoys excellent conditions for addressing the challenges of the future within marine research and education. The department is host to the Centre for Sea and Society (havochsamhalle.gu.se), an entry point to all marine and maritime activities within the University of Gothenburg. The Gothenburg area is a national hub for management of the sea, including being the location of the Swedish agency for Marine and Water Management (www.havochvatten.se/eng) and the Swedish Institute for the Marine Environment (http://www.havsmiljoinstitutet.se).

The department has about 100 employees – researchers, teachers, students, technicians and administrators. Research is conducted both within specialised individual projects as well as within larger interdisciplinary programmes. A third cycle education at our department will lead to a Ph.D. in Natural sciences with a specialization in Marine Science. Ph.D studies comprise four years at the post graduate level. The time period can be extended to 5 years in total through teaching and/or other departmental duties.
