The project PalMod is a project between MPI-M and several other German research institutes and universities, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Science (BMBF), to understand climate system dynamics and variability during the last glacial cycle. Within the research group Ocean Biogeochemistry in the department The Ocean in the Earth System of the MPI-M and as part of the project PalMod, we are looking for a Postdoctoral Scientist (m/f, Ref. MPIM-W035)
in the area of ocean biogeochemical modeling. The work will focus on understanding how marine biogeochemical processes controlled the ocean carbon sink and thereby the atmospheric CO2 during the last deglaciation. The successful applicant will work on adjusting the global biogeochemistry model HAMOCC for the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). She/he will perform transient model simulations with HAMOCC in the framework of the Max Planck Institute?s Earth System Model (MPI-ESM) starting in the LGM to the present. This research will make a major contribution to the MPI-M’s ongoing model development efforts aimed at improved representation of carbon and nutrient sequestration in the ocean. It is also essential for the PalMod’s activities focusing on the role and mechanisms of the feedbacks between the carbon cycle and climate during glacial times.
Qualifications / Experience
? A PhD in oceanography, geoscience, environmental sciences, or a related field is required for this position.
? Compelling understanding of ocean biogeochemical dynamics, in particular regarding its role in Earth?s climate.
? Experience with ocean carbon cycle models, skill in model development.
? Strong programming skills in Fortran, post-processing and visualization software (e.g., NCL, CDO), as well as experience in handling large data sets.
? Strong communication and organizational skills and an ability to effectively communicate results of scientific research to project members and international colleagues.
? The position is offered until 31 August 2019, starting as soon as possible.
? Payment will be in accordance with German public service positions (TVoeD E14), including extensive social security plans. The conditions of employment, including upgrades and duration, follow the rules of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Sciences and those of the German civil service.
